چکیده

Introduction: The Martian origin of the group of SNCO’s comprising now 16 different meteorites is widely accepted [1]. The ejection of these meteorites from Mars requires an impact process which necessarily involves a certain level of shock metamorphism affecting the meteorites to get accelerated to Martian escape velocity. Previous studies [2 and ref. in 1] clearly showed that all 16 Martian meteorites are moderately to strongly shocked with the effect that in most meteorites plagioclase is transformed to diaplectic glass [3] except in the nakhlites. A first order estimate for all 16 samples shows that the range of observed shock pressures derived from shock effects in the constituent minerals is limited to about 15 to 45 GPa. It appears highly desirable to obtain quantitative shock barometry for all 16 meteorites which is so far only available for 4 of them. For 6 meteorites we present first results of a comprehensive shock barometry study which is based on high precision refractive index measurements of plagioclase and on experimental calibration of the refractive index by shock recovery experiments [2].

High-pressure Mineralogy of Shock Veins in Meteorites Does Constrain the Equilibrium Shock Pressure and Its Duration

Introduction: A recent paper on helium loss from Martian meteorites states that the high-pressure mineralogy of veins is not a good equilibrium pressure barometer.[1] We respectfully disagree. However we do agree with the authors that it is likely that helium loss from Martian meteorites is largely due to shock metamorphism. It is not certain that the shock metamorphism was coincident with the ...

Ages and Geologic Histories of Martian Meteorites

We review the radiometric ages of the 16 currently known Martian meteorites, classified as 11 shergottites (8 basaltic and 3 lherzolitic), 3 nakhlites (clinopyroxenites), Chassigny (a dunite), and the orthopyroxenite ALH84001. The basaltic shergottites represent surface lava flows, the others magmas that solidified at depth. Shock effects correlate with these compositional types, and, in each c...

Petrographic Study of Thermal and Shock Metamorphism of the Hungarian

Introduction We investigated two processes in a series of the Hungarian L-chondrites: shock and thermal metamorphism. Thermal metamorphism transforms the textures in the relatively small chondritic planetary body. Shock metamorphism is caused by hypervelocity impact processes transforming texture and mineral structure mainly in the outermost layers of the chondritic planetary body [1,2]. The pu...

A NEW HIGH-PRESSURE CALCIUM ALUMINOSILICATE (CaAl2Si3.5O11) IN MARTIAN METEORITES: ANOTHER AFTER-LIFE FOR PLAGIOCLASE AND CONNECTIONS TO THE CAS

Introduction: Most martian meteorites are highly shocked, with plagioclase transformed to maskelynite or even melted and partially crystallized [1,2]. These responses to shock conditions on Mars provide clues to the nature of the ejection events for martian meteorites and to local shock conditions. Where new-to-science phases are discovered, meteoritic occurrences can also inform the study of e...
